Pokemon Trainer
Pokemon is a game all about collecting, with the added bonus of a rich RPG environment. This heavily includes the Pokemon Trainer, which is by definition someone who catches, raises, trains, and battles Pokemon. If you've watched the Anime show, you’ll know: Trainers have to be around ten years old to get started. Ash, the main character in the TV series, was lucky enough to get a starter Pokemon from the Pokemon Professor Oak.
In each video game, players are also given this opportunity early on. By traveling around different regions, Trainers hone their skills and technique by collecting Badges from Gym Leaders in each city and becoming the ultimate Pokemon Master.
In the video games, the "golden rule" for pokemon trainers is unavoidable; in the show, it's a sign of respect: once two players lock eyes, they must fight each other in a Pokemon Battle.
In the video games, there are several types of trainers. Amongst them are Youngsters, who usually are close to their homes (aka a city), Bug Catchers, who wait in forests, Hikers, who can be found in mountains and caves, Fishermen, who are always around water, and Ace Trainers, who want to be in the Pokemon League competitions. These classes are a good sign of what types of Pokemon that trainer might have, the techniques that they use, their skill level, and where they prefer to roam and lurk. This doesn't mean, however, that all Trainers are the same. So always stay on your toes!
Gym Leaders are also important to Trainers, whether that be you or Ash. Gym Leaders are generally a few levels stronger than your typical Trainer, and beating them is essential to becoming a Master. Collecting Gym Badges by defeating Leaders is a great way to gain experience and showcase your skill. After defeating all possible Gym Leaders, who usually favor one type of Pokemon, the next goal is to defeat the Elite Four. Usually more than several levels ahead of the typical Trainer, these Four along with the Champion are the final destination for many on the road to the Pokemon League victory. You have to have eight badges to even fight these guys, but if you win, it's well worth the blood, sweat and tears. In Pokemon Emerald, Platinum, HeartGold and SoulSilver, there is also the Frontier Brains of the Battle Frontier to contend with.
Each series also has its fair share of villainous trainers. In the Anime show, the infamous Jesse and James of Team Rocket are Ash's nemeses. In each video game, a new enemy attempts to block your path: these include anywhere from Team Magma to Team Aqua, Team Galactic and Team Plasma, just to list a few.
Nemeses have become an unavoidable part of the game's storyline and are essential in defeating the game and sometimes even in obtaining access to the Elite Four.
